Families of Color Seattle
Equity and Inclusion Workshop for Montlake Elementary
The Montlake PTA Board and the Montlake Equity and Inclusion Parent Group are pleased to announce that we will be hosting a workshop on equity and inclusion on Tuesday, May 18th, 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm. Please join us!
Families of Color Seattle (FOCS) will lead this workshop just for Montlake Elementary. Our goal is to bring greater focus on equity and inclusion to the Montlake community. All members of our Montlake community are welcome. Ongoing education and conversation will help us continue to move forward with our commitment to equity and inclusion in our school and community.
Other school communities in our area (Bryant and View Ridge) have completed this training; we're excited to join and gain expertise from FOCS.
To attend the workshop:
Register for the workshop in advance to receive the Zoom meeting link: http://bit.ly/MESFOCS21
Prepare for the workshop. To make the most of our time with FOCS, they have requested that we do the following preparation before the workshop. (It should take only 45 minutes to complete.)
1. Read the two-page document: Community Agreements & Common Language
2. Watch an 8-part series of very brief videos. "What Is Systemic Racism?" shows how racism shows up in our lives across institutions and society: Wealth Gap, Employment, Housing Discrimination, Government Surveillance, Incarceration, Drug Arrests, Immigration Arrests, Infant Mortality. https://www.raceforward.org/videos/systemic-racism
3. Watch “The Origin of Race in the USA” video: https://www.pbs.org/video/the-origin-of-race-in-the-usa-wbm41s/
4. Take the Harvard Implicit Association Test (IAT) prior to the workshop. The presenters especially recommend Race ('Black - White' IAT), and Skin-tone ('Light Skin - Dark Skin' IAT); you are welcome to do any other Project Implicit tests after these two.
About FOCS: FOCS is a non-profit organization led by mothers of color that is connecting parents to build loving, equitable communities. They specialize in working with parent groups and educators and to create community dialogues around racial equity, family engagement, and anti-bias education.
Thank you and we look forward to seeing everyone there!
